Hanukkah Watercolor Lantern – Jewish Crafts

December 7, 2015 By punktorah

These lovely lanterns are sure to brighten up your house on a dark Winter night. They are easy for little ones to make and the result is beautiful.

You will need:

White paper
Glitter glue, sequins, markers and any other decorations you might like to use
Some olive oil
An iron
Watercolour paints
Paintbrushes
An empty glass jar
A battery operated tealight

Start by painting the whole piece of paper. We decided to paint our paper blue, but you can pick a different colour or even use multiple colours, too.

Let your paper dry. When it has dried use a cloth or paintbrush to paint the entire paper with olive oil. This will make your paper see-through.

Place your paper between two tea towels and iron it on a low setting to remove any excess oil. This is a step for the grown-ups, so please mind little fingers!

When you have ironed your paper you can decorate it any way you like. We decided [Read more…]

Paper Plate Purim Masks

February 5, 2013 By punktorah

Purim is all about dressing up and having fun!
These fun masks are easy for children to customise themselves and with a bit of imagination you can dress up as absolutely anyone!

You will need:

  • A paper plate
  • scissors
  • ribbons
  • crayons
  • sticky gems or buttons

Cut a mask shape into your paper plate. We left space for the nose and later added holes for the eyes.

Cut the top of the mask into the right shape for your costume. Rivka wanted to dress up as Queen Esther so we cut a crown shape into the top of the mask, but you can add horns or antennae, too..

Now you just have to fill in the details and decorate your mask, we added shiny gems, eyebrows, eyelashes and a crown, but you could add an eyepatch, spots or glitter and feathers, too! Have fun! Chag Purim Sameach!

Recycled Tzedakah Box

December 3, 2012 By punktorah

One of my favourite things to do is make items that we will actually use. Not only is it a great opportunity to learn about different traditions, it also fills the little ones with pride to see their very own creation being used over and over again.
One item we use every day is the tzedakah box. It is easy to make your own from recycled materials that you probably already have at home.

Tzedakah Box project

You will need:

An empty container with a plastic lid
Paper
Decorations like stickers, sequins or buttons
Glue
Scissors
Glitter glue

Image of necessary materials

Start by measuring your container and cutting your paper to the right size, it should fit around the container and cover any writing.

Let your little one write the word tzedakah onto the paper in Hebrew letters, don’t worry, this doesn’t have to be perfect!

Now you can decorate your tzedakah box in any way you like. We decided to stick blue and white sticky buttons onto [Read more…]

Popsicle Star of David Bunting – Jewish Crafts

November 25, 2012 By punktorah

One of the most widely recognised symbols of Judaism is of course the beautiful Star of David, which makes it a great symbol to use when decorating your home for the holidays. We love to make these Star of David buntings for all sorts of different holidays and just recently made more ready for Hanukkah. The buntings are easy to make and leave lots of room for creativity and individualisation.
You will need:
Popsicle sticks in many different colours
Glue
String
Decorations like shiny gems or sequins
Start by picking out six popsicle sticks. Glue three each into a triangle. You should have two triangles now. Put your triangles on top of each other to make a Star of David shape and glue the popsicle sticks in place.

Now you can decorate your star with sticky gems, sequins or glitter glue.
Make a whole bunch of stars! You can [Read more…]
