If You Move, Does It Hurt the Jewish Community?

December 20, 2012 by Patrick Beaulier

I’m sitting around my house on Shabbat, looking at all the faces of my wonderful friends who come to OneShul Atlanta to daven, eat delicious food, and banter until the wee hours of the morning.

Then it hit me — half of the people in this room, if not more, will leave soon.

A few are looking for work, and in this economy, people go wherever the money is. Fair enough. A few are graduating from college, and have other opportunities back home, or perhaps somewhere different. A few are transient: not owing any allegiance to one city over another. And another group have family and friends elsewhere, and want to be near them.

I am left to wonder: what do Jewish communities do, given the turnover rate in our mobile society?
