It’s traditional to eat dairy on Shavuot, which begins the first week of Sivan. Because of this, we’re going to explore dairy for the month of Sivan.

Let’s start with the separation of milk and meat in the Torah. What it actually says is “don’t boil a kid in its mother’s milk” (לֹא-תְבַשֵּׁל גְּדִי, בַּחֲלֵב אִמּוֹ). This prohibition is found tthree times in the Torah: Ex 23:19, Ex 34: 26 and Deut 14:21, which means — seriously, don’t freaking do this we’re not kidding around!!! Most likely this was a prohibition on mixing life and death; milk being the source of life and death being meat, very literally in this case the meat of the kid goat. It was also, according to the Encyclopeida of Jewish Symbols, a common ancient pagan practice to give an offering of [Read more…]

Is Cholov Yisroel A Scam? Or Am I Missing Out On Holiness?

October 27, 2010 by Patrick Beaulier

My first encounter with cholov yisroel milk was sour…pun intended. Here’s a video of me ranting about it. Warning: if you live in the LA area and are into Jewish events, you might be in this video.

UPDATE:

So it seems, I might have been wrong. A reply from someone on YouTube:

You got me. You delivered a very nice, typical, take on Cholov Yisroel. Thank you for your interest in this subject. I am very involved in making Cholov Yisroel down in Florida. We are an all grass fed, free range, one single family farm, and no hormones or other drugs. We also remove all of the diseased animals from the milking herd. Such as; Displaced Abomasums, and any cows who have had certain various surgical procedures. Even though the FDA deems them safe for human consumption… However, According to kosher rules they are not fit. This is only done on a Cholov Yisroel operation.
Again, I enjoyed your enthusiasm and most of all your interest. If you’re ever going to be in the central Florida area, shoot me a email. Very Truly Yours, Tzvi AKA Tevye of Tevye Farms Cholov Yisroel dairy

Vanilla Milk and Honey

July 14, 2010 by newkosher

This drink is a great substitute for coffee in the morning or a sweet treat after dinner. It came together after a friend of mine told me about drinking hot soy milk and honey in Israel.

Vanilla Milk and Honey

1 cp. Milk (I suggest 1% cow milk, but any milk will do)

1/4 tsp. Vanilla Extract (the real kind, not artificial)

2 TBSP Tupelo Honey

Sprinkle of Cinnamon, Nutmeg to taste

Warm milk and vanilla on the stove. Add honey to warm milk and stir until well mixed. Pour into a cup and serve with a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg to taste.
