Mashup: Lech Lecha, Creepy Bible Videos, Chuck Norris, American Beauty

October 25, 2012 by Patrick Beaulier

Welcome to Torah Video Mashup, where we bring you the weekly Torah portion as told by your favorite viral YouTube videos.

People complain that our society is going totally ADD, especially when it comes to education. Who knows? Maybe this video is too long. Maybe it would be better if the story of Abraham and Sarah were just a crummy iMovie trailer…

So that’s cool, but you haven’t learned anything. So let’s do this in short chapters.

God then told Abram to leave his country and his father’s house for a land that He would show him, promising to make of him a great nation, bless him, make his name great, bless those who blessed him, and curse those who cursed him. That land of course is Canaan, AKA Israel. I wonder if Abraham’s vision came to him like this Israeli tourism video?

There was a severe famine in the land of Canaan, so that [Read more…]

Mashup: Parshah Bereishit, Honey Badger and Numa Numa

October 10, 2012 by Patrick Beaulier

It’s a new year and it’s time for new videos from PunkTorah. Circle Pit the Bimah set the bar really high (thanks Jeremiah!) and it’s tough to meet that challenge.

But this year at PunkTorah, we’re doing something different. This year, we’re using using your favorite viral videos from around the intertubes to tell the stories of the Torah. Videos will be narrated by Patrick Aleph, and anyone else who wants to volunteer!

In Bereishit, we learn that Adam and Eve were stuck in “the friend zone”, that the snake in the Garden of Eden really should have been a honey badger, and that being Jewish requires a higher attention span than the infamous Numa Numa video demands.

Watch and learn! And be sure to comment below.

Punk Maggid: Sacred Stories

August 27, 2012 by Patrick Beaulier

Joey B’Shalom, working as the Punk Maggid, lives to help other Jews grab onto the awesomeness that is the Divine Holy Wow, aka G-d, through telling Jewish stories, wrestling with Torah, and reinterpreting Jewish ritual for the 21st century. She lives in Portland, OR, with her ridiculously amazing partner and their four spectacular teenagers.

Every month on PunkTorah, Punk Maggid will be posting one of her exciting, engaging tales.

This month’s story, entitled Sacred Stories, is described as follows:

The Men of the Great Assembly decided what would be part of our Torah and what wouldn’t. But when they were done deciding, something totally unexpected happened that rocked their world. “Sacred Stories” is about what happens when we try to limit Torah to what we think we already know. And it’s about adding our voices to the great Jewish conversation that spans the centuries.
