Women Who Say Shema Should Put On Tallis and Tefillin

We know that there have been a lot of discussion about whether or not women should or can wear tallis and tefillin. Patrick and I wanted to point out this article on our friend Heshy Fried’s blog that debates the matter. Where do you come down on this issue? We’d love to know. Hit us back in the comments here!

    Hi,

As I understand it, woman are not condemned for wearing “traditionally male” ritualistic objects, like Tefillin and Talit. They are just not required. They don’t have to fulfill the commandment. Its a time thing, as they don’t have the time as they are “raising a family”. In this day and age where house hold and word duties are more evenly split in a relationship, I say go for it, If it makes you feel closer to Hashem or more comfortable within a community. What ever the reason (positive) I say it’s OK and I believe Biblical OK as well.

On a personal note, I’m not use to seeing woman in Talit and Kippas so I don’t really like it, that is one reason why I moved to an Orthodox Shul, but I still believe in freedom of choice. So go for it. Who knows maybe my daughter will want to wear one day, at that is OK!
